Why I participate in Alpe d'HuZes?

I’m cycling de Alpe d’Huzes, cycling to raise money for the Dutch Cancer Foundation.

Since some years I spend a few days in the mountains every year with my cycling friends. My first trip was to Bormio and for me that was just about having fun with some mates and to enjoy what “Dolce Italia” had to offer besides some cycling trips in the Italian mountains.

The year later the group convinced me to join them for a full week to cycle from Biarritz to Barcelona passing / climbing most of the iconic climbs in the Pyrenees. I can assure you; I was nervous as hell at the start of the trip but in the end I / we made it. The week of cycling was fascinating, was hard, was hot, was exhausting, it was fun and it was in the end very satisfying as we cycled approx. 700km and climbed many more heigh meters than I could ever imagine. The years later we did put more focus on the fun part, at least I did, the trips brought us to Winterberg in Germany, Calpe in Spain and this year I’m going to do something different………..no more fun but serious stuff; climb to raise money for a very worthwhile matter.

This year we will raise money for the Dutch Cancer Foundation “KWF”. I will participate with my wife and two children in the “Alpe d’HuZes”. We won’t do this just with my own family but also together with the family of my friend and brother in law together with his wife and two sons.

We are all in training, we have invested in bicycles as most of the family members never cycled on a race bike before and many more things are happening prior to the event itself on the 5th June in the French Alps. All with the ultimate goal to raise as much as possible money to further support the Dutch Cancer Foundation in their research to cure this dreadful disease. Their slogan “Surrendering is not an option” and this is exactly how I feel.

I want to climb the Alpe d’Huez (as it’s the official name of the Alp mountain) 3 times in total on the day, knowing that I’m the worst climber in the world. The climb is 14,5 km long with a total ascent of 1.118 meters and an average gradient of 8%.

Of course I’m reaching out to you requesting you for a donation via the below link (Ctrl enter) , it goes without saying that it’s 100% up to you as I know a lot of requests are coming to us on a regular base so please don’t feel obliged what so ever, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart!!!
