From Lab Bench to Leg Stretch

At Alpe d’HuZes, we’re raising vital funds to bring hope closer for those facing cancer. While my work in cancer research drives discovery, there’s even more power in stepping beyond the lab to support the patients who inspire us all. From lab bench to leg stretch, every effort brings us nearer to a future where cancer can be overcome.

Lab Rats in Action

Sunday 24th Nov
I’m currently in the second year of my PhD in the lab of Michiel Vermeulen, part of the molecular biology department at Radboud University. In our lab, we study cancer at its most fundamental level, focusing on proteins. Proteins are essential molecules that carry out most of the functions in our cells, and understanding them is key to uncovering how cancer cells grow, survive, and spread. My research project focuses on colorectal cancer, which is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. More specifically, I study transcription factors — proteins that bind to DNA and thereby regulate our genes. In cancer cells, gene regulation becomes disrupted compared to healthy cells, giving cancer cells a growth and survival advantage and enabling them to metastasize. By investigating how mutations in transcription factors drive these changes, I aim to uncover potential new therapeutic targets for treating highly aggressive colorectal cancer tumors.

Oncode: Outsmarting cancer

Sunday 24th Nov
Our lab is part of the Oncode Institute, an organization dedicated to advancing cancer research. Oncode recognizes that cancer is not a single disease but a complex and constantly evolving set of conditions. This makes it difficult to treat, as cancer often adapts to or resists therapies. Oncode researchers across different fields and different labs in the Netherlands investigate the biology of cancer in-depth, aiming to identify its vulnerabilities. By fostering collaboration and helping turn scientific discoveries into treatments, Oncode works to make significant progress in the fight against cancer.
